Workplace Health Strategy
National and local strategies on occupational health and health and safety at work guide the work of the MPHDS.

The role of the workplace as a setting for health promotion was boosted by the report by Dame Carol Black in 2008: ‘Working for a healthier tomorrow: Review of the health of Britain’s working age population’

This was followed by a review of the health of NHS staff by Dr Steve Boorman in 2009: ‘NHS Workforce Health and Wellbeing Review'

These two reports emphasise the importance of promoting workforce health as a way of reducing sickness absence.  In November 2010, Dame Carol Black was appointed to head the ‘Health at Work’ network, one of the Health Secretary of State, Andrew Lansley’s five ‘responsibility deal’ networks on public health issues.

National Service Frameworks on Cancer and on Coronary Heart Disease and on Mental Health all suggest ways in which workplaces can contribute to cutting the toll from these conditions. link

Locally, Manchester City Council and NHS organisations are working together to improve the health of the working population.
